Blainvillimys langei was named by Vianey-Liaud (1972). Its type specimen is AUB 2352, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Aubrelong 1, which is in an Oligocene fissure fill phosphorite/claystone in France.
