Taxonomy
Ischnacanthus was named by Powrie (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid D Sieg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 455]. It is not extant. Its type is Ischnacanthus gracilis. It is the type genus of Ischnacanthidae. It was considered monophyletic by Voichyshyn and Szaniawski (2012).

It was assigned to Ischnacanthida by Woodward (1891), Sepkoski (2002); to Ischnacanthiformes by Voichyshyn and Szaniawski (2012); and to Ischnacanthidae by Jordan (1963), Denison (1979), van der Laan (2019).
