Taxonomy
Dipterus was named by Sedgwick and Murchison (1828) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 2,1066]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Dipteridae. It was considered monophyletic by Bryant and Johnson (1936).

It was replaced with Catopterus by Agassiz (1833).

It was assigned to Ctenododipterini by Huxley (1861); to Dipnoi by Bryant and Johnson (1936); to Dipteridae by Owen (1859), Woodward (1891), Hay (1902), Bryant (1932), Miles (1977), Campbell and Barwick (1990), Schultze (1993); and to Dipteriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
