It was assigned to Coelacanthidae by Woodward (1891); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Mawsoniidae by Forey (1998), Schultze (2004); to Latimeriidae by Dutel et al. (2012); to Dipluridae by Graf (2012); and to Latimeriinae by Ferrante and Cavin (2023).
