Tricuspiodon rutimeyer was named by Lemoine (1891). Its type specimen is CRL 798, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cernay, which is in a Thanetian terrestrial horizon in the Conglomérat de Cernay Formation of France.
