Ticinepomis was named by Rieppel (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-l]. It is the type genus of Ticinepomiinae.
It was assigned to Coelacanthiformes by Forey (1998); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Coelacanthidae by Rieppel (1980), Schultze (2004); to Dipluridae by Graf (2012); to Latimeriidae by Dutel et al. (2012), Cavin et al. (2013); and to Ticinepomiinae by Ferrante et al. (2023), Ferrante and Cavin (2023).
