Taxonomy
Boreosomus was named by Stensiö (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Indu Tr Ladi Sepkoski's reference number: 863].

It was assigned to Acrolepidae by Lehman (1952); to Palaeoniscidae by Nielsen (1942), Beltan (1968), Beltan (1972), Uyeno (1978); to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptycholepididae by Cartanyà (1999), Neuman (2015).
