Plesispermophilus ernii was named by Stehlin and Schaub (1951). Its type specimen is Bale museum specimen no. 2180, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coderet (MP 30), which is in a MP 30 terrestrial horizon in France.
