Palaeotherium ruetimeyeri was named by Franzen (1968). Its type specimen is NMB Ec-552, a maxilla, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Egerkingen, alpha fissure, which is in a Bartonian fissure fill horizon in Switzerland.
