Australosomus was named by Pivetau (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr l Sepkoski's reference number: 916]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pholidophoridae by Lehman et al. (1959); to Pholidopleuriformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Palaeoniscidae by Irmis (2005); and to Pholidopleuridae by Beltan (1968), Uyeno (1978), Beltan (1980), Neuman (2015).
