Taxonomy
Cleithrolepis was named by Egerton (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Cleithrolepidae.

It was assigned to Semionotidae by Woodward (1890), Woodward (1895); to Perleididae by Beltan (1972); to Perleidiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cleithrolepidae by López-Arbarello and Zavattieri (2008).
