Acentrophorus was named by Traquair (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Lepidotidae by Hay (1902), Rapp (1946); to Semionotiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Semionotidae by Woodward (1895), Gill (1923), Gardiner (1960), Tintori and Lombardo (2007).
