Taxonomy
Leptaena profunda was named by Hall (1852). It is the type species of Protomegastrophia.

It was recombined as Strophodonta profunda by Hall (1867); it was recombined as Stropheodonta (Brachyprion) profunda by Hall and Clarke (1892); it was recombined as Protomegastrophia profunda by Northrop (1939); it was recombined as Brachyprion (Protomegastrophia) profunda by Jin and Chatterton (1997).
