Eosemionotus was named by Stolley (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen Tr Anis-u]. Its type is Allolepidotus vogelii.
It was assigned to Semionotidae by Beltan (1972), Schultze and Möller (1986), Cartanyà (1999); to Semionotiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Eosemionotidae by Bürgin et al. (1991), Bürgin (2004); and to Macrosemiidae by López-Arbarello et al. (2019), Diependaal et al. (2024).
