Sinoeugnathus was named by Su (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Sinoeugnathus kueichowensis.

It was assigned to Amiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Subortichthyidae by Feng et al. (2023).
