Ectasis was named by Jordan and Gilbert (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Gonorhynchidae by Jordan and Gilbert (1919); to Elopiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Elopidae by Jordan (1921), Fierstine et al. (2012).
