Blastochaetetes was named by Dietrich (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 691]. It is not extant. Its type is Blastochaetetes reitneri.

It was assigned to Chaetetidae by Hill (1981); to Tabulospongida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Demospongiae by West et al. (2015).
