Taxonomy
Etmopterus was named by Rafinesque (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant. Its type is Etmopterus aculeatus. It is the type genus of Etmopteridae.

It was assigned to Squalidae by Jordan (1963); to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Etmopteridae by Cahuzac et al. (2007), Underwood and Schlogl (2013), Straube et al. (2015).
