Taxonomy
Notogoneus was named by Cope (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Notogoneus osculus.

It was assigned to Gonorhynchiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gonorhynchidae by Woodward (1901), Hay (1902), Grande (1996), Grande and Grande (1999) and Gaudant et al. (2018).
