Rubiesichthys was named by Wenz (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala-l K Haut-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Rubiesichthys gregalis.

It was assigned to Chanidae by Poyato-Ariza (1996); and to Gonorhynchiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
