Oncorhynchus was named by Suckley (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 915 also includes Pacific trout]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Salmoniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Salmonidae by Jordan (1907), Fierstine et al. (2012).
