Valenciennellus was named by Jordan and Evermann (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Stomiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Sternopthychidae by Girone et al. (2006); and to Sternoptychidae by Steurbaut (1979), Steurbaut (1982), Steurbaut (1984), Stringer (1998) and Schwarzhans (2019).
