Apateodus was named by Woodward (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915].

It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Enchodontidae by Woodward (1902); to Ichthyotringoidei by Goody (1969); to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ichthyotringidae by Nagrodski et al. (2012), Bice and Shimada (2016).
