Taxonomy
Halec was named by Agassiz (1834) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Sant Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is the type genus of Halecidae.

It was assigned to Enchodontidae by Woodward (1901) and Woodward (1902); to Halecidae by Goody (1969); and to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
