Scopelosaurus was named by Bleeker (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Aulopiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Notosudidae by Schwarzhans (2013); and to Scopelosauridae by Schwarzhans (1980) and Schwarzhans (2019).
