Aipichthyoides was named by Gayet (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Aipichthyoides galeatus. It is the type genus of Aipichthyoididae.
It was assigned to Aipichthyidae by Patterson (1993); to Aipichthyoididae by Gayet (1980) and Otero and Gayet (1996); and to Polymixiiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
