Merlangius was named by Geoffroy (1767) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Merlangus by Leriche (1926), Heinrich (1969).

It was assigned to Pisces by Risso (1827); to Gadidae by Leriche (1926), Heinrich (1969), Holec (1975); and to Gadiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
