Physiculus was named by Kaup (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 503]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Anacanthini by Frost (1934); to Bregmacerotidae by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983); to Gadiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Moridae by Steurbaut (1979), Steurbaut (1984), Fierstine et al. (2012), Schwarzhans (2019), Schwarzhans and Nielsen (2021).
