Trisopterus was named by Rafinesque (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Gadinae by Steurbaut (1984); to Gadiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gadidae by Girone et al. (2006).
