Cobitopsis was named by Pomel (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Cobitopsidae.

It was assigned to Beloniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cobitopsidae by van der Laan (2019).
