Scomberesox was named by Lacépède (1803) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Beloniformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Scomberesocidae by Jordan and Gilbert (1919), David (1943), Fierstine et al. (2012); and to Belonidae by Arambourg (1925), Arambourg (1927), Argyriou (2022).
