Melamphaes was named by Guenther (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Melamphaidae by Schwarzhans (1980), Schwarzhans (2013), Lin et al. (2017) and Schwarzhans (2019).
