Bronteus insularis was named by Billings (1866). Its type specimen is GSC 2558, a pygidium, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Goldius insularis by Twenhofel (1928); it was recombined as Kosovopeltis insularis by Chatterton and Ludvigsen (2004).
