Bessazoon gibbae was named by Chatterton and Ludvigsen (2004). Its type specimen is GSC 122362, a pygidium, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is AN23, which is in an Aeronian open shallow subtidal shale in the Jupiter Formation of Canada.
