Proetus (Gerastos) was named by Goldfuss (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Give-l Sepkoski's reference number: 933,1106]. Its type is Proetus cuvieri.

It was misspelled as Gerastes by Sepkoski (2002); it was reranked as Gerastos by Jell and Adrain (2002), Magrean (2007), Van Viersen et al. (2019), Bault et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Proetus by Goldfuss (1843); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proetinae by Magrean (2007), Van Viersen et al. (2019), Bault et al. (2021).
