Trionyx silvestris was named by Walker and Moody (1974). Its type specimen is BMNH R 8567, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Abbey Wood, which is in a Ypresian marine sandstone in the Blackheath Beds Formation of the United Kingdom.

  • Trionyx michauxi was named by Broin (1977). Its type specimen is LG-FSM 3488, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mancy, which is in a Ypresian terrestrial horizon in the Sables a Unios et Teredines Formation of France.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Trionyx silvestris by Georgalis and Joyce (2017).
