Taxonomy
Acanthochelys cosquinensis was named by de la Fuente (1992). Its type specimen is MLP 77-V-12-1, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cosquin River, which is in a Montehermosan/Chapadmalalan terrestrial horizon in the Casa Grande Formation of Argentina.

It differs from other Acanthochelys by the presence of a cervical that is as wide as long and a quadrangular pygal.
