Laelaps macropus was named by Cope (1868). Its type specimen is AMNH 2250–2253, a set of limb elements (partial tibia, pedal phalanx II-1, pedal phalanges III-2, MT IV, MT III), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is G. C. Schenck Farm, which is in a Maastrichtian marginal marine marl in the Navesink Formation of New Jersey. It is the type species of Teihivenator.
It was recombined as Dryptosaurus macropus by Hay (1902), Huene (1927) and Miller (1955); it was synonymized subjectively with Coelosaurus antiquus by Matthew and Brown (1922), Hay (1930) and Steel (1970); it was considered a nomen dubium by Holtz (2004) and Holtz et al. (2004); it was recombined as Teihivenator macropus by Yun (2017).
