Symethinae was named by Goeke (1981). It is not extant. Its type is Symethis.

It was reranked as the family Symethidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Raninoidea by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Raninidae by van Bakel et al. (2012), Karasawa et al. (2014), Nyborg et al. (2017), Schweitzer et al. (2018).
