Calcarichelys was named by Zangerl (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 987]. Its type is Calcarichelys gemma.

It was assigned to Protostegidae by Thurmond and Jones (1981), Carroll (1988); to Chelospharginae by Zangerl (1953), Weems (1988); to Protosteginae by Hooks (1998); and to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002).
