Carolinochelys was named by Hay (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol]. Its type is Carolinochelys wilsoni.

It was assigned to Cheloniidae by Hay (1930) and Berry and Lynn (1936); to Cheloniinae by Weems (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); to Chelonia by Sanders and Geisler (2015); and to Pancheloniidae by Weems (2014) and Weems and Brown (2017).
