Dermochelys was named by de Blainville (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Dermochelyidae, Dermochelyoidea.
It was assigned to Dermochelyinae by Weems (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); to Cryptodira by Joyce (2007); to Testudines by Anquetin et al. (2009); to Dermochelyoidae by Bardet et al. (2013), de Lapparent de Broin et al. (2014); and to Dermochelyidae by Hay (1930), Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988), Hirayama (1995), Frank and Ramus (1996), van Dijk et al. (2014), Rhodin et al. (2017).
