Erquelinnesia was named by Dollo (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was synonymized subjectively with Euclastes by Lynch and Parham (2003); it was reranked as Euclastes (Erquelinnesia) by Kear and Lee (2006).

It was assigned to Thalassemydidae by Hay (1908) and Hay (1930); to Osteopyginae by Moody (1980) and Weems (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); to Euclastes by Kear and Lee (2006); and to Cheloniidae by Hirayama (1995) and Myers et al. (2018).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
O. P. Hay 1908Skull resembling that of Caretta caretta, but more elevated and descending more rapidly in front of the orbits. Palate flat, bounded by low cutting-edges, and extending backward to the hinder half of the roof of the mouth. Choanae in the hinder half of the roof of the mouth, their anterior boundary formed by the palatines, which have met behind the palatal plate of the vomer. Lower jaw not beakt. Shell resembling that of Caretta, but more rounded behind.
