Megalaspis planilimbata was named by Angelin (1851). It is the type species of Megistaspis (Paramegistaspis).
It was recombined as Plesiomegalaspis planilimbata by Tjernvik (1956); it was recombined as Megistaspis (Paramegistaspis) planilimbata by Hoel (1999).
