Podocnemis geologorum was named by Simpson (1943). Its type specimen is AMNH 6781, a partial shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Quebrada Honda - Zaraza, which is in a Santacrucian terrestrial sandstone/marl in Venezuela.
