Testudo coriacea was named by Vandelli (1761). It is extant.

It was recombined as Coriudo coriacea by Fleming (1822); it was recombined as Dermochelys coriacea by Hay (1930), Mrososky and Pritchard (1971), van Dijk et al. (2014) and Rhodin et al. (2017).
