Tetrao rufus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Caccabis rufa by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927); it was recombined as Alectoris rufa by Seguí et al. (1997), Crowe et al. (2006), Clements et al. (2017).
