Ptilopachus was named by Swainson (1837). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ptilopachinae.
It was assigned to Perdicinae by Crowe et al. (2006); to Ptilopachinae by Bowie et al. (2013); and to Odontophoridae by Clements et al. (2017).
