Cancer squinado was named by Herbst (1788). It is extant. It is the type species of Maja.
It was recombined as Maja squinado by van Bakel et al. (2003), Garassino and De Angeli (2004), Pasini and Garassino (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2020).
