Taxonomy

Baptornis was named by Marsh (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Baptornis advenus.

It was assigned to Aves by Marsh (1877); to Odontolcae by Zittel (1890); to Apatornithidae by Shufeldt (1915); to Hesperornithidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930); to Enaliornithidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Hesperornithiformes by Sepkoski (2002), Padian (2004); to Ornithuromorpha by O'Connor and Zelenkov (2013), Wang et al. Species

B. advenus (type species), Parascaniornis stensioei

Synonyms

Parascaniornis stensioei was named by Lambrecht (1933). Its type specimen is MGUH 1908.214, a set of vertebrae (Dorsal vertebra), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ivö Klack (Lund University collection), which is in a Campanian carbonate limestone in Sweden. It is the type species of Parascaniornis.

It was corrected as Parascaniornis stensioi by Brodkorb (1952); it was misspelled as Parascaniornis stensioi by Brodkorb (1971); it was considered a nomen dubium by Rees and Lindgren (2005).
Parascaniornis was named by Lambrecht (1933). Its type is Parascaniornis stensioei.

It was synonymized subjectively with Baptornis by Rees and Lindgren (2005).

It was assigned to Scaniornithidae by Lambrecht (1933), Howard (1955), Wetmore (1960); to Torotigidae by Brodkorb (1971); and to Hesperornithiformes by Nessov and Prizemlin (1991).
